New Delhi: Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra has concluded his eight-year tenure as vice chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, marking the end of a significant leadership chapter in his decorated career.
The 43-year-old, who etched his name in history by winning India’s first individual Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, described the experience of serving athletes worldwide as deeply fulfilling.
Taking to social media, Bindra reflected on the responsibility of representing athletes’ voices at the highest level of the Olympic Movement.
“Serving athletes from across the world has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my journey in sport. To be entrusted with their voices, their concerns, their hopes and their dreams is a responsibility I have never taken lightly,” he wrote, reiterating his belief that athletes must remain at the centre of Olympic decision-making.
His term ended following a reshuffle during the ongoing Winter Olympics in Italy, with Kenyan rugby player Humphrey Kayange taking over the vice chair role.
The 19-member IOC Athletes’ Commission plays a vital role in shaping Olympic policies, including evaluating host city bids, overseeing Games organisation, promoting anti-doping efforts and advancing education and training initiatives — particularly for women athletes.
Bindra said he steps away with pride in what the commission has achieved and optimism about the future of athlete representation, confident that the next generation of leaders will continue to strengthen the athletes’ voice within the Olympic Movement.
