The Indian women’s hockey team is in a tough spot, sitting at the very bottom of the FIH Pro League 2024-25 points table. They’re going to need a “miracle” win against China in their final match in Berlin on Sunday to avoid being relegated.
Currently, the team, led by Salima Tete, has just 10 points from 15 games, placing them ninth. The only other team at risk of dropping down to the FIH Nations Cup is Germany, who are in eighth place with 13 points.
How Can India Avoid Relegation?
Here’s the tricky path for Coach Harendra Singh’s team to stay in the Pro League:
- Hope for a Germany loss: India needs Germany to lose their final match against England, which is happening earlier on Sunday.
- Beat China decisively: If Germany loses, India then has to beat China in their own season-ending fixture. This would bring both India and Germany to 13 points.
Even if they both end up with 13 points, there’s another hurdle: goal difference. India currently has a goal difference of -20, while Germany is at -7. This means India needs a massive win against China to swing their goal difference enough to overtake Germany and secure their spot in the Pro League next season.
The Sunday Showdown: Timing is Everything
The schedule adds an interesting dynamic:
- Germany plays England at 5:30 PM IST.
- India’s match against China begins at 8:00 PM IST.
This timing means that if England manages to beat Germany, the Indian team will know exactly how big of a win they need against China to survive. However, if Germany even just manages a draw against England, that will be enough for them to stay in the Pro League, sending India to the FIH Nations Cup regardless of their result against China.
