Glenrose Xaba, the reigning champion of the 2025 Spar Grand Prix, just extended her lead in the series with a fantastic win in the Durban leg of the women’s 10km road running race.
Running for Boxer Athletics Club, Xaba held back for the first half, letting Ethiopian runners Diniya Abaraya and Selam Gebre set the pace. But once they hit the halfway mark, Xaba took charge. She pulled away from the lead group just after the 6km mark and comfortably won the race in 31:54, even running the second half 14 seconds faster!
Nineteen-year-old Diniya Abaraya, in her first senior season, secured second place with a time of 32:09. Selam Gebre, despite fading slightly towards the end, managed to hold on for third place in 32:25. Abaraya shared her gratitude, telling SuperSport, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to race here. The weather conditions were wonderful, and we pushed one another. I’m happy with the result and I want to congratulate Glenrose on her achievement today.”
It was a seriously fast race overall, with the top five women all finishing under 33 minutes. Neheng Khatala of Lesotho came in fourth at 32:31, and her teammate Tayla Kavanagh was just a second behind her in fifth place with 32:32. The event itself was a huge success, with 12,000 participants joining the Spar Women’s Challenge Durban!
