Bhubaneswar : In a significant development ahead of the Asia Cup, the Indian selectors, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, have expressed confidence in Shubman Gill as a potential long-term leader of India’s T20 side. During the selection meeting on August 19, Gambhir, who attended online, strongly backed Gill to be groomed for captaincy responsibilities.
Vice-Captaincy Seen As First Step
Gill has been named vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup, a move widely interpreted as the first step towards preparing him for greater responsibilities. Both captain Suryakumar Yadav and the team management were clear that Gill’s presence in the T20 squad is not only as a batter but also as a leader in the making.
Return To T20 Format After Test Commitments
The Punjab opener, who has largely been involved in Test cricket this year and missed several T20 assignments due to scheduling conflicts and a back spasm, now returns to the shortest format. His recent form in the England series reportedly cemented his case, with selectors impressed by his composure and consistency.
Long-Term Leadership Vision
The decision to groom Gill is part of a broader plan to identify the next generation of leaders for Indian cricket. Having already taken on key responsibilities in red-ball cricket, Gill is now being prepared for a more expansive leadership role across formats. Sources suggest that this is a deliberate succession strategy, keeping in mind the transitional phase Indian cricket is likely to face in the coming years.
