St. Louis, USA – Indian Grandmasters D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa both settled for draws in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup, with Praggnanandhaa now sharing the lead in the tournament. The day’s only decisive result saw American Fabiano Caruana defeat France’s Alireza Firouzja, joining Praggnanandhaa and Levon Aronian at the top of the leaderboard.
Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh Maintain Position
For world champion Gukesh, the draw came against American wild card Samuel Sevian. Playing with the black pieces, Gukesh expertly handled Sevian’s Rossolimo variation against his Sicilian Defense. The game proceeded smoothly through the middle game with continuous piece exchanges, leading to a simple, drawn endgame where Gukesh was always in control. This marks Gukesh’s first draw after his opening-round loss to Praggnanandhaa.
Praggnanandhaa, playing his first black game of the tournament after two wins with white, chose the Nimzo-Indian Defense against Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Abdusattorov, who is still struggling to find his form, failed to gain any significant advantage. The game eventually transitioned into an opposite-colored bishops’ endgame, where a draw was the most logical and just result. Praggnanandhaa’s second consecutive draw keeps him in the leading group.
Caruana’s Victory and the Leaderboard
The day’s sole decisive outcome belonged to Fabiano Caruana. He outplayed Alireza Firouzja with a fine positional game, using the Fianchetto variation against the Nimzo to establish a spatial advantage. Caruana methodically improved his position, and his well-timed push of a central passed pawn to the seventh rank secured a crucial victory.
With six rounds still to go in the $375,000 prize money tournament, the leaderboard is tightly packed. Praggnanandhaa, Aronian, and Caruana now share the top spot with two points each. A half-point behind them are Wesley So, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Samuel Sevian, and D Gukesh, all tied on 1.5 points.
With top spots in the Grand Chess Tour at stake, Caruana expressed his satisfaction with the win, noting that the battle for the remaining qualification spots for the final is highly competitive.
