Calafiori’s Early Strike Lifts Arsenal At Old Trafford
Arsenal made a statement in their Premier League opener with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Defender Riccardo Calafiori, making his league debut, scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute following a well-worked set-piece routine.
Mikel Arteta’s side showed defensive steel after taking the lead, frustrating United’s attempts to equalise. Viktor Gyökeres, Arsenal’s marquee summer signing, was handed a start, while Benjamin Sesko came off the bench for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The night also brought further intrigue as striker Rasmus Højlund was left out of United’s squad altogether, amid strong reports linking him with a move to AC Milan.
Chelsea Frustrated By Palace In Goalless Draw
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were forced to settle for a point after being held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace. Despite dominating possession, the Blues struggled to break down a well-drilled Palace defence.
Eberechi Eze appeared to give Palace the lead with a first-half free-kick, but VAR intervened, ruling the goal out after Marc Guéhi was adjudged to have encroached the defensive wall.
Chelsea, boasting several new recruits, lacked cohesion in attack and failed to convert their control into clear chances. Palace, meanwhile, displayed discipline and resilience, continuing to show progress under their new campaign despite ongoing speculation surrounding star duo Eze and Guéhi.
Early Signals In The Title Race
The results serve as an early reminder of the challenges facing the Premier League’s top clubs. Arsenal have shown they can grind out results away from home, while Chelsea’s lack of cutting edge remains a concern. Manchester United, meanwhile, are already under pressure following a lacklustre display and uncertainty surrounding their striker situation.
