Morocco – Defending champions South Africa and Ghana both required the tense drama of penalty shootouts on Saturday, July 19, 2025, to book their places in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinals. They are now set for high-stakes clashes against formidable opponents Nigeria and Morocco, respectively, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

Ghana Edges Algeria in Early Kick-off Thriller

In the day’s early quarterfinal clash at the Berkane Stadium, Ghana’s Black Queens overcame Algeria in a thrilling penalty lottery, prevailing 4-2 after their tie ended in a goalless draw following extra time.

The Ghanaian quartet of Josephine Bonsu, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Evelyn Badu all successfully converted their spot-kicks, showcasing nerves of steel. Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan emerged as a hero for the Black Queens, denying Marine Dafeur and Ines Belloumou from 12 yards out with crucial saves that ultimately sent Ghana into the last four.

Banyana Banyana Overcome Senegal to Continue Title Defense

Later that same evening at the Honneur Stadium, Banyana Banyana of South Africa remained firmly on course to defend their WAFCON title. They secured their semifinal spot by defeating Senegal 4-1 in a penalty shootout, following a gruelling 120 minutes of goalless football.

Goalkeeper Andile Dlamini rose to the occasion for Desiree Ellis’ side, making two crucial saves during the shootout. Her heroics were complemented by composed penalty conversions from Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado, and Bambanani Mbane, who held their nerve under immense pressure to clinch the victory.

Semifinal Showdowns Set for Tuesday

The stage is now set for two highly anticipated semifinal encounters on Tuesday, July 22, 2025:

  • South Africa vs. Nigeria: This blockbuster clash will see the defending champions take on the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
  • Morocco vs. Ghana: Hosts Morocco will face Ghana’s Black Queens at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with both teams vying for a spot in the grand final.

The winners of these semifinals will compete in the WAFCON 2024 final on Friday, July 25, 2025.
