The Indian pair reached the semifinals after defeating Hong Kong鈥檚 world No. 4 combination of Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem in the quarterfinals, assuring India a medal in the event.
Strong Quarterfinal Win for Manush Shah and Diya Chitale
The Indian duo produced a crucial 3-1 victory over the Hong Kong pair, winning 11-6, 13-15, 11-9, 11-5. Shah and Chitale had previously lost all three of their meetings against Wong and Doo, but Chitale said they entered the match with a clear strategy and focused on executing it effectively.
Asian Games 2026 Table Tennis Challenge in the Semifinal
The semifinal brought a much tougher challenge as Manush Shah and Diya Chitale faced China鈥檚 Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha. The Chinese pair, reigning Olympic champions, won the contest 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 11-2, ending India鈥檚 run towards the final. However, reaching the last four was enough to secure the bronze because there was no separate bronze-medal playoff.

The Asian Games 2026 table tennis bronze is India鈥檚 second medal in mixed doubles at the Asian Games. The first came in 2018, when Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra won bronze in Jakarta. It is also India鈥檚 fourth table tennis medal in Asian Games history, with all four being bronze medals.
Diya Chitale on the Importance of the Medal
For Chitale, the achievement carries special significance because of the strength of table tennis across Asia. She said winning an Asian Games medal in a sport dominated by powerhouses such as China, Japan and South Korea makes the achievement particularly meaningful. She described it as her biggest medal to date and one she will always cherish.
A Special Tribute to Peter Engel
The medal also came during an emotional period for Diya, who lost her long-time coach and mentor Peter Engel shortly before the Games. Chitale had worked with Engel since 2015 and credited him with developing her game. She dedicated the Asian Games 2026 table tennis bronze to him, saying it would have been wonderful for him to see her achieve the milestone.
