Sreeshankar Wants More Than 8 Metres: India’s Long-Jump Star Now Chasing the Next Leap

After rebuilding his career from a serious knee injury, Murali Sreeshankar has made 8m-plus jumps routine. His next mission is to turn that consistency into 8.20m-plus performances and challenge for bigger medals.

The main story

Bhubaneswar: Murali Sreeshankar is no longer asking whether he can return to his best. His performances this season have already answered that question.

The Indian long jumper has crossed the 8-metre mark in all six competitions this season, with a best of 8.38m. Now, the target has shifted. Sreeshankar wants 8 metres to become the starting point rather than the achievement.

His ambition is to consistently jump beyond 8.20m, a level he believes can put him in a stronger position at major international competitions.

“Any particular day, irrespective of the weather, I want to bring the consistency above 8.20m,” Sreeshankar said.

From injury setback to elite form

The journey is particularly significant because Sreeshankar’s career was seriously disrupted by a patellar tendon injury in 2024, which ruled him out of the Paris Olympics.

Instead of rushing his comeback, the 27-year-old went through an extended rehabilitation programme and gradually rebuilt his strength, speed and jumping ability.

His return has now developed into one of Indian athletics’ strongest comeback stories.

The signs of his resurgence were clear at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, where he produced a spectacular 8.38m — only three centimetres short of his national record of 8.41m, also set at Kalinga Stadium.

Numbers that tell the story

Sreeshankar’s 8.38m victory was not a one-off flash of brilliance. His complete series showed remarkable consistency:

1st jump: 8.06m

2nd jump: 8.00m

3rd jump: 8.21m

4th jump: 8.38m

5th jump: 8.26m

6th jump: Foul

Five of his six attempts were therefore at least 8 metres, while three crossed 8.20m.

The 8.38m mark was the second-best jump of his career, making him the leading Asian long jumper for the season at that stage and placing him seventh globally.

India’s long jump standard is rising

Sreeshankar is also benefiting from an unusual development in Indian athletics: the competition at home has become significantly stronger.

At the Inter-State Championships, Shahnavaz Khan produced a personal best of 8.30m for silver, while David P finished third with 8.06m. The growing depth means Sreeshankar is no longer competing in an event where 8 metres automatically guarantees dominance.

The stronger domestic competition could prove valuable as India prepares for major international championships.

Kalinga Stadium: the venue where Sreeshankar keeps soaring

Bhubaneswar has become a special place in Sreeshankar’s career.

His national record of 8.41m and his 8.38m season-best effort have both come at Kalinga Stadium. He has repeatedly spoken about his comfort at the venue, where the conditions appear to suit his jumping style.

It is fitting, then, that his latest breakthrough came on the same runway where he had previously established his national record.

Bigger jumps, bigger medals

Sreeshankar’s ambitions extend beyond numbers.

He won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with 8.08m and another silver at the 2023 Asian Games. After his return to the top level, the next objective is to change the colour of the medal.

He subsequently won another Commonwealth Games silver in Glasgow with 8.09m, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

The bigger picture, however, is the 2028 Olympic cycle. Sreeshankar believes his technical development still has room to unlock considerably greater distances.

The next challenge: turning speed into distance

One of the areas Sreeshankar wants to improve is his take-off technique. He believes he sometimes converts too much of his approach speed into vertical movement instead of carrying that momentum horizontally into the pit.

That technical adjustment could be crucial.

If he can combine his improved physical condition, runway speed and growing consistency with a more efficient take-off, the difference between another 8.30m jump and a genuinely world-class mark could come down to a few centimetres.

For now, though, Sreeshankar has already achieved something important: 8 metres is no longer the destination. It is the new baseline.

And for an athlete who once faced doubts over whether he would compete at the highest level again, that is perhaps the most significant measure of his comeback.
