Chelsea have completed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth around £47 million, including add-ons.
The 21-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the option of a further year and becomes the first arrival since Xabi Alonso was appointed Chelsea manager.
Chelsea beat Inter to Palestra
Palestra had been close to rejoining his boyhood club Inter Milan, but Chelsea moved quickly to outbid the Serie A giants. The Premier League club reportedly exceeded Inter’s £43 million offer and also presented a more lucrative wage package.
“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra said after completing the move.
“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”
Outstanding season at Cagliari
Palestra spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where he was named Serie A Defender of the Year after an impressive campaign.
He made his senior Atalanta debut in the Europa League in 2023 before flourishing during his loan spell, which also earned him his first senior Italy cap in the World Cup play-offs.
According to Opta, Palestra completed 70 successful dribbles last season — the highest by any defender across Europe’s top 10 leagues. He also led Serie A defenders for long-distance dribbles and ranked among the league’s best for attacking contributions from defence.
Alonso shaping Chelsea squad
Chelsea are now expected to focus on signing a centre-back, with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix emerging as their primary target. Talks are also continuing over Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria.
The club already has agreements in place for Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, while Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is also expected to arrive.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are considering further additions in midfield and attack, although their transfer activity could depend on outgoing players after missing out on European qualification last season.
Enzo Fernandez has attracted interest from Real Madrid, while Como are in discussions over Trevoh Chalobah. Several other first-team players, including Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto and Tosin Adarabioyo, also face uncertain futures.
Versatility key to Chelsea move
Chelsea monitored Palestra for more than a year and view him as an attack-minded defender capable of playing both as a full-back and wing-back. He also began his career as a central midfielder, highlighting his tactical versatility.
His arrival could indicate Alonso’s intention to implement the back-three system that brought him major success at Bayer Leverkusen.
Former Cagliari sporting director Guido Angelozzi praised the defender’s maturity and professionalism, saying Palestra possesses the technical quality, tactical intelligence and mentality needed to succeed at the highest level.
