Mikel Merino Rescues Spain Against Croatia

Mikel Merino produced a match-winning performance as Spain came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League on October 6. Ivan Perisic gave Croatia the lead, but Merino scored twice after coming off the bench to complete Spain’s comeback. The victory maintained Spain’s perfect Group A3 record and booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Croatia Strike First Against Spain

Croatia football started strongly in Split, with Unai Simon making an early save before Ivan Perisic opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Simon had stopped Igor Matanovic’s effort, but Perisic reacted quickest to the rebound and headed Croatia ahead. Luka Modric and his teammates continued to threaten, putting Spain under pressure during the first half.

Merino Goals Change the Spain Match

Spain introduced Mikel Merino at half-time, and the change quickly transformed the Spain match. In the 61st minute, Dani Olmo supplied the pass and Merino produced a low finish to make it 1-1. Croatia’s task became even harder when Perisic received a second yellow card in the 79th minute and was sent off.

Merino Scores Again to Seal the Spain Win

With only two minutes remaining, Merino scored again. The midfielder turned brilliantly before firing past Dominik Livakovic to complete his brace and give Spain a 2-1 win. It was another decisive contribution from a player who has repeatedly made an impact from the bench for Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Spain Keep Their Perfect Nations League Record

The Spain team now have four wins from four in Group A3 and have reached the Nations League quarter-finals with two group matches still remaining. The victory also extended Spain’s unbeaten run to 42 matches, while they remain three points ahead of England at the top of the group.

A Big Night for Merino and Spain

The Spain football story in Split was ultimately about resilience. Croatia had taken the lead and created problems, but Merino’s two goals turned the game around. For Spain, the result keeps their perfect Nations League campaign alive and sends a clear message ahead of the knockout stage.
