Ramon Vega Challenges Infantino for FIFA Presidency
Ramon Vega Challenges Gianni Infantino for FIFA Presidency
Former Switzerland and Tottenham defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to challenge Gianni Infantino in the 2027 FIFA election. The 55-year-old becomes the first person to publicly declare a challenge to Infantino, who is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president. The election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco.
Ramon Vega Calls for FIFA Reform
Ramon Vega has placed FIFA reform at the centre of his campaign. In his statement, the former defender said he wants to “reunite the global football family” and modernise FIFA while restoring stability and trust. He also argued that football should belong to everyone involved in the game, not only presidents and administrators.
“FIFA Needs a New Direction”
Vega delivered a strong message about football leadership, saying: “FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform.” He also described football as being “in the emergency room, on life support”, making his call for change the central theme of his FIFA presidency bid.
From Tottenham to the FIFA Election
Before entering the FIFA election spotlight, Vega built a career in professional football. He earned 23 caps for Switzerland and played for Tottenham, Celtic and Watford before retiring in 2004. He later moved into the financial sector, bringing a different professional background to his latest FIFA campaign.
Vega Has Tried Before
This is not Vega’s first attempt to reach the FIFA presidency. He considered running in 2015 and announced plans to challenge Infantino in 2019, but failed to secure the backing of the required five FIFA member associations. Candidates for the 2027 election have until November 18, 2026, to declare their intention to stand.
Infantino Faces a New FIFA Challenge
Gianni Infantino remains the incumbent and has confirmed his intention to seek another term. His leadership has faced criticism following the collapse of a controversial private-investment plan linked to FIFA competition commercial and ticketing rights. At the same time, Infantino continues to receive strong backing from several regions, including Africa.
The FIFA election now has its first declared challenger. Whether Ramon Vega can secure the support needed to reach the ballot will be the next major test in his bid to reshape FIFA football leadership.
