Orlando Gill produced the performance of his life as Paraguay stunned Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, but the goalkeeper’s remarkable World Cup story began long before his heroics on the pitch.
Just four years ago, Gill was selling his football kit to support his family after the premature birth of his son. Now, he has become one of the breakout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Penalty shootout hero
The 26-year-old goalkeeper saved two penalties as Paraguay secured only the second World Cup knockout victory in the nation’s history.
Standing 6ft 6in tall, Gill has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout goalkeepers after conceding just one goal in his last three matches, including extra time against Germany.
His shootout display earned him FIFA’s Player of the Match award and further enhanced his growing reputation on the international stage.
From hardship to hope
Gill’s rise has been anything but straightforward.
After making only two senior appearances for Paraguayan club San Lorenzo, his life changed dramatically in 2022 when his wife, Melissa Avalos, suffered severe complications during the birth of their son, Lautaro.
Melissa required emergency surgery, while their newborn son spent time in intensive care. Facing financial hardship, Gill sold his football boots, clothes and even his Paraguay Under-20 jersey to help cover medical expenses.
Melissa later revealed that the family “had nothing” during that difficult period, with Gill sacrificing treasured possessions to support them.
Career transformed in Argentina
A year later, Argentine giants San Lorenzo offered Gill a lifeline by signing him on loan.
He spent the remainder of 2024 with the reserve team before breaking into the first team in 2025, performances that caught the attention of Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro.
Gill made his international debut in September 2025 and quickly established himself as Paraguay’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the World Cup.
Family remains his motivation
Following his match-winning performance against Germany, Gill dedicated his Player of the Match award to his nephew Alexander, who is currently in hospital back home.
“Alexander, this trophy is for you,” Gill said.
“I hope you get better soon. Your godfather is supporting you from a distance.”
From selling his possessions to support his young family to becoming Paraguay’s World Cup hero, Gill’s remarkable journey has become one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories.
