SHENZHEN, September 1: India’s Unnati Hooda suffered an early exit from the China Masters 2026, losing to South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun in the women’s singles opening round on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Indian, ranked World No. 25, was beaten 21-10, 21-18 by the World No. 12 Korean at the Shenzhen Sports Centre Gymnasium. The match lasted 37 minutes.

Although the result went against Hooda, the second game offered a glimpse of the fight she was capable of producing against a higher-ranked opponent. The Indian improved her attacking intent and stayed within touching distance of Kim before the Korean produced the decisive points.

Kim Sets the Tone Early

The opening game was largely controlled by Kim.

The Korean made an aggressive start and quickly moved 4-0 ahead. Hooda struggled to find a consistent rhythm, allowing Kim to build an 11-3 advantage at the interval.

Kim continued to dictate the rallies after the break and prevented Hooda from making a meaningful comeback. The Korean eventually wrapped up the opening game 21-10.

For Hooda, the challenge was clear: she needed to change the pattern of the match and find a way to put Kim under sustained pressure.

Hooda Fights Back in the Second

The second game looked considerably different.

Hooda started positively and went 3-0 up, showing more aggression and making better use of her attacking shots. Kim responded and moved ahead 7-5, but the Indian refused to let the game slip away.

Hooda fought her way back and briefly moved in front at 15-14. The contest then entered its most important phase.

Kim edged ahead 18-16, but Hooda immediately fought back with two points to level the score at 18-18.

However, the Korean handled the closing moments better. Kim won the next three points to finish the game 21-18 and complete a straight-games victory.

A Tough Test Against a Higher-Ranked Opponent

This was the first meeting between Hooda and Kim Ga Eun on the BWF World Tour, making the contest a significant test for the young Indian. Kim entered the tournament as the higher-ranked player and had also arrived in China with confidence after winning the Macau Open in June.

Hooda’s biggest difficulty came in establishing control during the early stages. Once Kim built her lead, the Korean was able to dictate the pace and force Hooda to play from behind.

The second game, however, was encouraging. Hooda showed greater confidence and managed to make the match competitive deep into the game. The 18-18 scoreline demonstrated that she had opportunities, but Kim’s experience proved valuable when the pressure was highest.

China Masters Exit, But Valuable Experience

The defeat ends Hooda’s China Masters campaign at the first hurdle, but the tournament remains another important learning opportunity for the 18-year-old.

For India, there is still plenty of singles action to come. Tanvi Sharma and Devika Sihag are scheduled to begin their campaigns on Wednesday, while Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth are also set to feature in the men’s singles.

Hooda will now look to take the lessons from Shenzhen into her next international assignment. Against one of the world’s top-ranked players, the first game exposed the gap she still has to bridge, while the second showed that she can push an elite opponent when she finds her rhythm.

Key Takeaway

Kim Ga Eun 2-0 Unnati Hooda

Game 1: 21-10

Game 2: 21-18

A disappointing opening-round result for India’s young shuttler, but the fight shown in the second game provides a positive takeaway from an otherwise difficult China Masters outing.
