Aitana Bonmatí has been named in Spain’s squad for the crucial FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier against England women’s national football team after recovering from a broken leg.
The FC Barcelona Femení midfielder fractured her left fibula during a Spain training session in November after landing awkwardly.
Bonmati made her return earlier this month and also appeared as a late substitute in Barcelona’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final victory over Olympique Lyonnais Féminin on Saturday.
Spain Need Victory Against England
Spain lost 1-0 to England at Wembley in April and now must beat the Lionesses at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on 5 June to keep qualification hopes fully in their own hands.
Only the winners of the four League A qualifying groups will directly qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
If Spain draw against England, they would then need to defeat Iceland women’s national football team while hoping England lose to Ukraine women’s national football team in the final round of fixtures.
Experienced Squad Named By Spain
Spain’s squad also includes experienced stars like Alexia Putellas, Patri Guijarro and Mariona Caldentey.
Defenders Irene Paredes and Ona Batlle have also been included, while forwards Salma Paralluelo and Claudia Pina strengthen the attack.
Spain head into the match knowing victory would significantly improve their chances of reaching the 2027 World Cup directly.
