The duo missed the second Test at The Oval after being made unavailable pending an investigation into an alleged breach of England’s team curfew following the first Test victory at Lord’s.
However, both players were allowed to feature in county cricket this weekend. Stokes represented Durham against Northamptonshire, while Atkinson turned out for Surrey against Glamorgan.
Stokes Finds Form Before Possible Return
Stokes produced an encouraging performance with the bat, scoring 95 runs for Durham on Saturday. It was his highest score in any format since his century against India in the fourth Test in July last year.
The England captain’s return would provide a major boost to a side that has struggled without his leadership and all-round abilities in the second Test.
Atkinson Impresses With The Ball
Atkinson also made a strong case for selection by taking four wickets in Surrey’s first innings against Glamorgan.
The pace bowler has become an important part of England’s attack and his return would strengthen a bowling unit that has looked inexperienced during the ongoing Test.
England Missed Their Senior Players
England entered the second Test without Stokes, Atkinson, injured seamer Ollie Robinson and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who is on paternity leave.
The absences forced the selectors into five changes and handed opportunities to three debutants. New Zealand have taken full advantage and are on course to level the series at 1-1 heading into the final Test.
Fast bowler Josh Tongue admitted England have felt the absence of their captain.
“Stokesy is an unbelievable player. I’ve got huge respect for him and it’s always nice seeing him get some runs,” Tongue said.
Decision Expected After Second Test
The investigation into the nightclub incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson has not yet been officially concluded.
England are expected to announce their squad for the third Test after the completion of the second Test at The Oval. If selected, both players are likely to return for the series decider beginning on Thursday at Trent Bridge.
