Real Madrid have confirmed an agreement to sign Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate on a four-year contract.
The France international will join the Spanish club as a free agent at the end of June after failing to reach an agreement with Liverpool over a new contract. Negotiations reportedly broke down due to differences regarding salary and the player’s valuation.
Real Madrid announced that Konate will remain at the club until June 2030.
End of a Successful Liverpool Spell
Konate arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for a reported £35 million and went on to become a key figure in the Reds’ defence.
During his five-year stay at Anfield, the 27-year-old made 183 appearances across all competitions. He helped Liverpool win the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Before his departure, Konate admitted he was disappointed not to get the opportunity to properly bid farewell to Liverpool supporters during the club’s final league game of the season against Brentford.
Mourinho Continues Squad Rebuild
Konate becomes the latest major addition under returning manager Jose Mourinho, who has begun reshaping the Real Madrid squad ahead of the new campaign.
The Spanish giants have already secured the arrivals of Bernardo Silva following his departure from Manchester City, while Spain international Marc Cucurella has joined from Chelsea in a deal worth around £52 million.
Looking Ahead
Currently part of France’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Konate will complete his Liverpool chapter before officially beginning a new challenge with Real Madrid, where he is expected to play a central role in Mourinho’s plans for the future.
