Sjoerd Marijne and India Hockey’s ‘Chak De’ Moment
India Hockey’s Historic ‘Chak De’ Moment
Back in 2020, Gurjit Kaur converted a penalty corner in the second minute against three-time Olympic champions Australia, scoring a new dawn for Indian hockey. The Indian team created history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. It was a “Chak De” moment for Indian hockey, and Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne was behind this historic feat.
Taking over as head coach in 2017, Marijne instilled a winning mentality in the players by working on the mindset of the team. He guided the Indian women’s hockey team to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.
Sjoerd Marijne’s Tryst With Sports
Marijne was introduced to sports at the age of three. His parents played tennis and took him to the court when he was young. At six, they advised him to play hockey because team sports were important for him.
Growing up, he was involved in sports throughout the day. He played tennis at a high level and enjoyed the teamwork involved in sports. For him, hockey became a sport where he could work towards a common goal.
From Player to Coach
Marijne explained that he was not always a player destined for the highest level. He started playing in the first 11 and wanted to fight his way into the team, with the dream of reaching the Olympics.
However, he eventually turned towards coaching. His playing experience and the possibilities of achieving more through coaching encouraged him to make the transition from player to coach.
Association With the Indian Hockey Team
Dutch field hockey coach Roelant Oltmans asked Marijne if he was interested in coaching the Indian team. Marijne accepted the opportunity because of the potential he saw in the team and the challenges of working in India.
His journey with the Indian team had its ups and downs, but the willingness of the team to improve became one of the reasons for its success. He worked with the players on fitness, mental strength and the belief that they could achieve their goals.
Words of Wisdom for Players
Marijne advised players to focus on day-to-day goals and remain open to feedback. He believes players should trust their training sessions and develop a clear vision of what they want to achieve.
According to him, mental strength is important because players must be able to perform under pressure and handle difficult situations.
Marijne’s Present-Day Coaching Journey
Marijne has continued his involvement in hockey and works with people in and outside sports. He combines his experience and inspiration to help companies and teams achieve their goals.
His journey from player to coach reflects his belief in teamwork, mental strength, fitness and continuous improvement.
