Brazil’s quest for a sixth FIFA World Cup title could also become the tournament that finally cements Vinicius Junior’s place in the hearts of his countrymen.
Despite being one of the world’s best players and a key figure for Real Madrid, Vinicius continues to face questions about his performances for Brazil. As the Selecao prepare for the 2026 World Cup, many believe this could be the moment the 25-year-old establishes himself as the team’s undisputed leader.
When speaking ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Panama in May, head coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged the absence of a dominant superstar in the mould of Pelé, Romário or Ronaldo Nazário. Instead, he stressed the importance of collective responsibility within the squad.
The spotlight, however, remains firmly on Vinicius. Four years after Brazil’s World Cup quarter-final exit to Croatia in Qatar, the forward is still striving to replicate his club form on the international stage. Although he leads Brazil’s current World Cup cycle with seven goals and six assists in 28 appearances, critics argue those numbers do not fully reflect his influence for Real Madrid.
Former Brazil assistant coach Cleber Xavier believes international football presents a different challenge. He pointed to the example of Lionel Messi, who faced similar criticism before leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.
Vinicius himself has spoken openly about the pressure. He believes the limited number of international matches creates greater scrutiny compared to club football, where players have regular opportunities to respond to criticism.
Still Chasing Neymar’s Popularity
While Vinicius has become one of football’s biggest global stars, he has yet to develop the same emotional connection with Brazilian supporters as Neymar.
Marketing expert Eduardo Musa believes Neymar’s popularity stems from the strong bond he built during his years at Santos before moving to Europe. Vinicius, meanwhile, left Brazil at a younger age after only a brief spell with Flamengo.
A recent Datafolha poll showed that 53% of Brazilian fans supported Neymar’s inclusion in the World Cup squad despite his injury struggles. The veteran forward’s popularity remains significant even as Vinicius enters the prime years of his career.
The Brazilian Football Confederation has actively attempted to increase Vinicius’ leadership role within the national team. Earlier this year, he was handed Brazil’s famous number 10 shirt during Neymar’s absence and was selected to represent the squad at major media events.
However, Neymar’s return has restored the iconic jersey to the 34-year-old, leaving Vinicius with another opportunity to prove himself on football’s biggest stage.
Ready for the Responsibility
Former coach Xavier believes Vinicius has evolved significantly in recent years, improving his finishing, movement and decision-making. He argues that a stronger team structure could finally allow the forward to produce his best football for Brazil.
Vinicius insists he is ready to embrace the expectations that come with being one of the world’s elite players.
After several successful seasons with Real Madrid and regular recognition among football’s top performers, he accepts that greater responsibility now comes with the territory.
As Brazil begin another World Cup campaign, the tournament could become more than just a title challenge. It may also be Vinicius Junior’s chance to silence his critics and finally convince an entire nation.
