Rory McIlroy swore at a heckler during the final round of the US PGA Championship after being distracted while attempting a shot at Aronimink.
The incident took place on the par-five 16th hole when McIlroy was preparing to chip out from the rough. A spectator shouted during his backswing, prompting the world number two to respond angrily and tell the fan to “shut up”.
McIlroy also appeared to gesture towards security staff to remove the spectator from the course.
Costly interruption during crucial moment
Following the disruption, McIlroy’s chip found a greenside bunker instead of setting up a birdie opportunity.
The 37-year-old recovered well with his next shot, placing the ball within five feet of the hole before sinking his par putt.
However, the hole represented one of the final realistic birdie chances during his closing round.
Rai claims historic major victory
Aaron Rai went on to win the tournament and became the first Englishman in more than 100 years to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.
McIlroy finished with a one-under-par 69 in the final round to end the tournament at four under overall, tied for seventh place and five shots behind Rai.
The Northern Irishman had entered the event after winning his second consecutive Masters Tournament title last month.
McIlroy to take short break before US Open
After the round, Rory McIlroy confirmed he will not compete again until the Memorial Tournament in three weeks.
His next major appearance will come at the US Open at Shinnecock in June.
