Real Madrid President Explodes Over Refereeing Row, Claims Club Was “Robbed” of 18 La Liga Points

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has reignited Spanish football’s long-running refereeing debate after accusing match officials of costing the club a staggering 18 points in the La Liga title race.

In a fiery address during the club’s general assembly discussions, Pérez reportedly lashed out at refereeing standards in Spain, claiming several controversial decisions throughout the season directly harmed Madrid’s campaign. His comments have once again placed officiating in La Liga under intense scrutiny.

The veteran club chief argued that repeated “inexplicable” calls against Madrid damaged the integrity of competition and frustrated both players and supporters.

“Football Cannot Ignore These Errors”

Pérez did not hold back while discussing officiating controversies, insisting that modern football must be more accountable in the VAR era.

According to reports, the Real Madrid president claimed that errors committed by referees and video officials had a decisive impact on the standings this season. He also questioned how certain decisions continued to go against the club despite technological assistance being available.

The comments come after multiple high-profile matches in which Madrid fans and club officials expressed frustration over penalties, offside calls, and disciplinary decisions.

The issue of refereeing standards has become one of the most polarising topics in Spanish football over the past few seasons, with several clubs publicly criticising officiating inconsistency.

Leadership Elections Officially Confirmed

Beyond the refereeing controversy, Pérez also confirmed that leadership elections at Real Madrid will be held in accordance with club regulations.

The announcement effectively signals the beginning of another important administrative phase for one of world football’s most influential institutions. Pérez, who has overseen several trophy-laden eras at the club, remains one of the most powerful figures in European football.

Under his presidency, Real Madrid have continued to dominate financially and competitively, while also playing a major role in projects such as the proposed European Super League and the redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Pressure Builds Ahead of New Season

The explosive remarks are expected to deepen tensions between Real Madrid and Spanish football authorities ahead of the new campaign.

Criticism of referees from major clubs often sparks heated reactions across Spain, especially when title races are closely contested. While supporters may rally behind Pérez’s frustration, rivals are likely to view the comments as an attempt to intensify pressure on officials.

With La Liga preparing for another high-stakes season, the debate surrounding refereeing standards, VAR consistency, and institutional influence appears far from over.
