Joshua’s ‘Ultimate Comeback’ After Crash Comes With Big Risk

Eddie Hearn warns of physical and mental challenges ahead of crucial return fight

Anthony Joshua is preparing for what has been described as the “ultimate comeback”, but his return to the ring also carries significant risk after a difficult few months.

The former heavyweight champion will face Kristian Prenga on 25 July in Saudi Arabia, a bout seen as a stepping stone before a potential blockbuster clash with Tyson Fury later this year.

Comeback after personal tragedy

Joshua last fought in December, defeating Jake Paul, but his career was put on hold following a serious car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two members of his team.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said the comeback goes beyond sport, highlighting the emotional, mental and physical toll the incident has taken on the 36-year-old. He described it as a return from the “deepest of lows,” noting that many athletes might not have considered fighting again after such an experience.

High-risk fight before Fury showdown

The fight against Prenga is not without danger. The Albanian enters with an impressive knockout record and has little to lose, making him a potentially tricky opponent.

Hearn admitted the bout is a calculated risk, but insisted it is necessary to ensure Joshua is fully prepared for Fury. A defeat would almost certainly derail plans for the long-awaited all-British showdown.

Pressure to prove readiness

Joshua faces questions not only about his physical condition but also his mental readiness to compete at the highest level again. His last win against a recognised opponent came in 2023, adding further pressure to deliver a convincing performance.

Hearn made it clear that the aim is not financial gain but competitive readiness. The focus is on ensuring Joshua is at his best before stepping into the ring with Fury.

Mega fight still in focus

The proposed clash with Fury remains one of boxing’s most anticipated fights. However, its future depends heavily on Joshua’s performance in July.

With guidance from Oleksandr Usyk, who has beaten both Joshua and Fury, preparations are underway to fine-tune strategy and mindset.

For Joshua, the upcoming fight is more than just a return — it is a defining moment that will determine whether he can once again compete at the very top of the heavyweight division.
