Gukesh Seeks Lord Venkateswara’s Blessings Before Title Defence

Gukesh Dommaraju visited the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala in Tirupati district on Friday, November 6, 2026, to offer prayers ahead of the biggest challenge of his chess career this year.

The reigning champion sought the blessings of the deity as he prepares to face Sindarov in the upcoming World Championship match. The visit comes at an important stage in his preparations, with the Indian grandmaster aiming to defend the crown he secured in 2024.

The Tirumala temple, situated in the hills of Andhra Pradesh, is one of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations and is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Gukesh to Face Javokhir Sindarov in 14-Game World Championship

Gukesh is scheduled to take on Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2026, with the match set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 24 to December 12.

The championship will feature 14 classical games at the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny. Both players will be 20 years old when the contest takes place, making it a historic battle between two young grandmasters for the world crown.

Sindarov earned his place as the challenger after winning the Candidates Tournament, setting up a major test for the reigning Indian champion.

Gukesh will aim to overcome the challenge and continue his reign as world champion in what promises to be a closely contested encounter.

Gukesh’s Historic World Championship Triumph in 2024

Gukesh made history in December 2024 when he defeated China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion at the age of 18 years, six months and 24 days.

The triumph in Singapore marked a landmark achievement for Indian chess, as Gukesh became only the second Indian after five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand to win the undisputed world title.

His achievement also established him as one of the youngest players to reach the highest level of the sport, following a rapid rise through international chess.

From Youngest Grandmaster to World Champion

Born in Chennai, Gukesh earned his Grandmaster title in January 2019 at just 12 years, seven months and 17 days, becoming one of the youngest players to achieve the distinction.

He continued to break records on the international circuit, becoming the youngest player to cross the 2750 rating mark. In September 2023, he also surpassed Viswanathan Anand to become India’s highest-rated player.

Gukesh has additionally played an important role in India’s success at the Chess Olympiads, winning individual and team gold medals.

With the World Championship approaching, the Indian grandmaster will now look to combine his experience and preparation to overcome Sindarov and successfully defend his title in Geneva.
