Madrid, Spain : World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable run at the Mutua Madrid Open, producing a commanding performance to defeat Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-2, 7-5 in the Round of 16 and advance to the quarter-finals.
In a match lasting under 90 minutes, the Italian top seed asserted control early on clay at La Caja Mágica, breaking Norrie twice in the opening set to take it convincingly 6-2. Despite a spirited response from the British No. 1 in the second set, Sinner held firm when it mattered most, securing a crucial break at 5-5 to close out the win.
With this victory, Sinner extended his winning streak to 20 consecutive matches across ATP Masters 1000 events this season — a rare feat matched only by Novak Djokovic in the Open Era — and remains on course for a fourth straight Masters title following triumphs at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo.
Reflecting on the encounter, Sinner acknowledged the familiarity between the two, noting, “We know each other quite well. We practised a lot in the last tournament. We both kind of knew what to expect.” He also spoke about the unique challenges of clay and the tournament’s scheduling, saying, “This surface is very, very different… it’s very tough to get the right feedback.”
Norrie, who had never faced Sinner in a competitive match before Madrid, showed glimpses of resistance but was ultimately unable to maintain momentum in the decisive moments.
Up next for Sinner will be either Vit Kopriva or home favourite Rafael Jodar, with both players set to contest their Round of 16 clash later in the day.
