Swiatek Survives Svitolina Storm to Set Up Toronto Showdown With Rybakina

Toronto, August 13, 2026: Iga Swiatek has given her 2026 season a much-needed lift. The former world No. 1 fought through a difficult semifinal against Elina Svitolina to reach the National Bank Open final in Toronto, where she will meet Elena Rybakina in a heavyweight contest with major significance ahead of the US Open.

Swiatek, the seventh seed in Toronto, defeated Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 after a contest that lasted more than two hours and was interrupted by rain. The result sends the six-time Grand Slam champion into her first final of the season.

Swiatek starts strongly, Svitolina responds

The semifinal began with Swiatek looking firmly in control. She quickly established a 4-0 advantage, putting Svitolina under immediate pressure.

The Ukrainian, however, refused to let the opening set disappear without a fight. She saved two set points in the final game, but Swiatek eventually secured the set 6-3.

The second set was a completely different story.

Svitolina found her rhythm and began putting Swiatek under sustained pressure. The Ukrainian raced through the set 6-1, forcing the match into a deciding set and shifting the momentum dramatically.

The deciding set becomes Swiatek’s response

Swiatek needed to reset quickly, and the Pole eventually found the answer.

Svitolina moved ahead 3-2, but Swiatek responded when the match was at its most demanding. She raised the quality of her ball-striking and took control of the closing stages.

The crucial moment arrived at 4-3, when Swiatek broke Svitolina without dropping a point to move 5-3 ahead. She then held serve to close out the contest and complete a hard-earned victory.

Swiatek’s reaction afterwards highlighted the importance of her comeback in the third set. Rather than allowing the second-set collapse to affect her, she managed to rebuild her level and finish strongly.

A much-needed final for Swiatek

The Toronto result is particularly important because Swiatek arrived in Canada without a tournament victory in 2026.

Her last title had come in Seoul almost a year ago, making this run an opportunity to change the narrative around her season. The seventh seed has now reached the championship match for the first time this year.

The victory also strengthens Swiatek’s record against Svitolina.

Head-to-head record: Swiatek leads 5-3 after the Toronto semifinal.

The result is even more notable because Svitolina had beaten Swiatek in their two previous meetings during 2026.

Svitolina, meanwhile, was chasing another major final after winning the WTA 1000 event in Rome and finishing runner-up in Dubai earlier this season. She also entered Toronto as the 2017 Canadian Open champion, but Swiatek’s stronger finish ended her run.

Rybakina completes the blockbuster final

Swiatek’s opponent will be Elena Rybakina, and the Kazakh star reached the final in equally impressive fashion.

Rybakina recovered from losing the opening set to defeat fourth seed Coco Gauff 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

The match followed a pattern that has become familiar during Rybakina’s Toronto campaign: early resistance from her opponent followed by a powerful response.

After dropping the first set, Rybakina immediately increased the pressure. She took control of the second set and carried that momentum into the decider, eventually completing another three-set comeback shortly before 1am local time.

Rybakina’s remarkable Toronto resilience

The Toronto final will be Rybakina’s opportunity to claim her third title of 2026.

She began the year by winning the Australian Open and later added the Stuttgart title. Her Toronto campaign has also featured repeated tests, including a comeback victory over Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals.

The victory over Gauff was another example of her ability to stay composed after losing the opening set.

Rybakina’s powerful serve and aggressive baseline game will present a very different challenge for Swiatek in the final.

Swiatek vs Rybakina: the numbers

The championship match will be the 11th meeting between the two stars, with Swiatek currently leading their career rivalry 7-3.

However, Rybakina has won their most recent meeting, defeating Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in the 2026 Australian Open quarterfinals.

That gives the Toronto final an additional layer of intrigue: Swiatek has the better overall record, but Rybakina has already shown this season that she can trouble the Polish star on a major stage.

Why the Toronto final matters

This is more than simply another WTA 1000 final.

For Swiatek, it represents a chance to turn a difficult season into a significant title run and regain momentum before the US Open.

For Rybakina, another trophy would further strengthen an already impressive 2026 campaign and help her move closer to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the rankings. With the US Open scheduled to begin on August 31, both players have a huge opportunity to make a statement before the final Grand Slam of the season.

Toronto has therefore produced an ideal final: Swiatek’s precision and movement against Rybakina’s power and serving strength.

One player is chasing her first title of the season. The other is hunting her third.

Either way, the Toronto championship match promises to be one of the biggest women’s tennis encounters of the North American hard-court swing.

Main Matter

The Toronto semifinal stage delivered two different comeback stories. Swiatek recovered from a one-sided second set to defeat Svitolina and reach her first final of 2026, while Rybakina overturned Gauff’s opening-set advantage to book her place in the championship match. Now, two Grand Slam champions meet in Toronto with momentum, rankings and confidence ahead of the US Open all at stake.
