One of South Africa’s greatest fast bowlers is back.
Veteran pace spearhead Shabnim Ismail has dramatically reversed her international retirement and has been named in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales. The 37-year-old, who retired in 2023, will once again don the iconic green and gold Proteas jersey.
Ismail, South Africa’s all-time leading wicket-taker in both ODIs and T20Is, expressed her emotions after the announcement. “I don’t think words can actually describe what it feels like to wear the Protea badge again… It’s a huge honour for me to play for the badge. So I’m really happy to be wearing the badge again,” she said.
A Comeback Driven by Passion and Purpose
Ismail admitted that a return was never part of her original plan. However, persistent encouragement from Proteas head coach Mandla Mashimbyi and conversations with her close ones gradually changed her mind. The coach’s heartfelt request — asking her to help the team finally win a long-awaited World Cup title — struck a deep chord.
“I’m coming back, first of all, because I miss playing cricket. I miss playing at the highest level,” Ismail added. She also highlighted her desire to contribute to a strong Proteas side that has reached multiple finals in recent years but is still chasing that elusive global trophy.
South Africa will open their T20 World Cup campaign against Australia on June 13 in Manchester.
Experience Meets a Rising Team
Despite her age, Ismail remains a formidable force with her pace, accuracy, and experience. She is expected to strengthen the bowling attack while also mentoring the next generation of Proteas players alongside stars like Marizanne Kapp, Laura Wolvaardt, and Chloe Tryon.
Her return adds significant depth and firepower to a South African squad that has been consistently competitive on the world stage.
