Joan Laporta has been re-elected president of FC Barcelona, promising a strong future for the club after winning a clear majority in the election. Laporta secured more than 68% of the votes and will begin a new five-year term starting from 1 July.
Laporta wins election with strong mandate
Laporta defeated challenger Victor Font, who received close to 30% of the votes. Nearly 48,500 members of the club participated in the election, reflecting a turnout of more than 42%.
The 63-year-old leader described the victory as a “resounding” result that gives the club confidence for the future. Laporta, who first served as Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010, returned to the role in 2021 and has now secured another term.
During his earlier tenure, he oversaw the appointment of legendary coach Pep Guardiola, which helped usher in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Promises for club development
In his victory speech, Laporta said exciting years lie ahead for Barcelona and insisted the club would continue to grow stronger. He also praised the democratic structure of the club, where members elect the president and board.
Laporta pledged to strengthen the first team and complete the redevelopment of the iconic Camp Nou stadium. The redevelopment project remains one of the club’s key long-term plans.
Barcelona aiming for more success
Despite facing serious financial challenges in recent years, Barcelona enjoyed a successful campaign last season by winning a domestic treble. The club currently leads Real Madrid by four points at the top of La Liga.
Brazilian winger Raphinha recently scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory over Sevilla FC, keeping Barcelona firmly on track in the title race.
The Catalan club will next face Newcastle United in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at St James’ Park, where youngster Lamine Yamal scored a dramatic late penalty.
