India Begin Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 Campaign with Gritty 1–0 Win Over Korea

The Indian men’s hockey team opened their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 campaign with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over the Republic of Korea in Ipoh, Malaysia, on Sunday.

Mohammed Raheel (15’) scored the lone goal of the contest, finishing a beautifully constructed team move to give India an early edge. The goal capped a dominant first-quarter display in which India controlled possession and created multiple chances. Sukhjeet Singh came agonisingly close to opening the scoring earlier, striking the post from close range after sustained pressure.

Korea found some footing in the second quarter, threatening on the counter-attack, but goalkeeper Mohith HS stood firm with a sharp save to maintain India’s lead going into halftime.

India resumed the second half with renewed intensity, earning back-to-back penalty corners, but the Korean defence held its shape. Korea continued to push forward in the third quarter, yet India’s defensive unit — calm, compact and disciplined — ensured the slender advantage remained intact.

The fourth quarter saw India wrest back control as they pushed for a decisive second goal. Korean goalkeeper Kim Jaehan was kept on his toes, making key saves including one from close range to deny Abhishek with seven minutes left.

Korea’s persistence earned them a last-minute penalty corner — a moment that could have dramatically altered the outcome. But Mohith HS once again proved India’s saviour, stretching out a strong right leg to keep the ball out and seal a confidence-boosting win.

Five-time champions India will face Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallists Belgium in their second match on Monday.
