England Recall Dawson for Old Trafford Fourth Test

Manchester: England’s selectors have drafted in 35-year-old spinner Liam Dawson to their squad for the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, replacing promising young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who is sidelined with a broken finger.

Bashir sustained the injury during fielding in England’s gripping 22-run win at Lord’s and is due for surgery this week. Despite the setback, he returned to bowl the final wicket of the Test, showcasing remarkable grit.

Dawson, who last played Test cricket in July 2017, has earned a surprise call-up thanks to his consistent domestic form. The Hampshire all-rounder was named PCA Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, boasting 371 first-class wickets and a batting average over 35.

England selector Luke Wright praised Dawson’s inclusion, stating, “Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire.”

Apart from Dawson’s inclusion, there are no other changes to the Test squad. Seamers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have been released to play county cricket, while Gus Atkinson is expected to return to the pace attack.
