Morocco continued their remarkable rise on football’s biggest stage with a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, securing a place in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive edition.
Playing in front of a passionate crowd in Houston, Canada started brightly and created several early opportunities, but their inability to capitalise proved costly. Morocco gradually settled into the contest before producing a clinical second-half display that underlined why they remain one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams.
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi was the architect of Morocco’s victory, scoring twice after the break to put the North African side firmly in control. His first goal came from a cleverly worked free-kick routine before he added another with a composed finish. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi then sealed the result with a stoppage-time strike, ending Canada’s spirited World Cup journey.
Canada, playing in the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time, showed plenty of determination despite missing influential captain Alphonso Davies through injury. However, Jesse Marsch’s side lacked the cutting edge required to trouble Morocco’s disciplined defence.
For Morocco, the victory is another landmark achievement following their historic 2022 campaign. The Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated their tactical discipline, defensive resilience and attacking efficiency as they continue to challenge the world’s footballing elite. They will now face France in a blockbuster quarter-final as they chase another memorable chapter in World Cup history.
