When Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande steps onto the pitch against Germany in Saturday’s World Cup group-stage clash, millions will be watching one of football’s brightest young talents. However, the 19-year-old insists his motivation goes far beyond football.
Diomande revealed in an emotional letter published this week that every achievement in his career is dedicated to his younger sister Roxanne, who died last year at the age of 15 after her drink was allegedly spiked.
“Everything I do on a football pitch, it’s for you,” Diomande wrote. “Every time I score, I’ll make sure everybody knows your name.”
The RB Leipzig star admitted he continues to struggle with the loss, describing the pain as something he carries every day while using it as motivation to push harder in his career.
Golden Boy Carrying Ivory Coast’s Hopes
Diomande has emerged as one of the standout young players at the tournament after helping Ivory Coast begin their campaign with a victory over Ecuador.
His teammate Amad Diallo has nicknamed him the “golden boy”, praising his dribbling ability and effectiveness in one-on-one situations. The teenager completed four successful dribbles against Ecuador, more than any other player at the World Cup so far.
Ivory Coast have never progressed beyond the World Cup group stage despite previous generations featuring stars such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure. Diomande believes the current squad possesses a stronger desire to make history.
“We have nothing to lose and we’ll give it everything,” he said. “That’s what our mentality needs to be.”
Rise to Stardom and Transfer Interest
Diomande’s rise has been remarkable. After leaving Abidjan as a youngster and spending time in the United States, he eventually earned a move to Spanish side Leganes before joining RB Leipzig for £17 million.
The winger enjoyed an outstanding debut Bundesliga campaign, scoring 12 goals and ranking among the league’s best performers in dribbles, duels won and chance creation.
His performances have attracted interest from several European giants, with Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly among the clubs monitoring his progress.
Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard believes Diomande already possesses the qualities needed to succeed at the highest level, highlighting his creativity, work ethic and willingness to take responsibility in big moments.
For now, though, the teenager’s focus remains on the World Cup and honouring the memory of the sister who always believed in him.
Diomande Looking to Shine on Biggest Stage
Ivory Coast’s clash with Germany offers Diomande another opportunity to showcase his talent on the global stage. While transfer speculation continues to grow, the teenager remains determined to help his country achieve something no Ivorian team has managed before — reaching the knockout rounds of a World Cup.
For Diomande, every step of that journey carries a deeper meaning.
