The Union Government has officially recognised the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) as the national governing body for the sport, ending long-standing confusion surrounding the administration of kho kho in the country. The recognition was granted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the year 2026.
The decision is being viewed as a major boost for the traditional Indian sport, especially amid disputes involving unauthorised organisations claiming legitimacy. According to the government’s clarification, only KKFI and its affiliated state associations are authorised to conduct and govern official kho kho activities across India.
The recognition remains valid till December 31, 2026, subject to the outcome of pending legal matters. The move is expected to streamline the functioning of the sport and remove uncertainty for players, coaches and organisers involved in official competitions.
KKFI officials welcomed the development, stating that the government’s decision would help protect genuine athletes and preserve the integrity of the sport. The federation also stressed that misinformation spread by unauthorised bodies had created confusion among stakeholders in recent years.
The Sports Ministry’s communication has also reportedly been forwarded to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Railway Board and other departments to ensure clarity regarding tournaments, sports quotas, player benefits and national participation.
The recognition is expected to strengthen the position of the Kho Kho Federation of India, headed by president Sudhanshu Mittal. The federation has been actively working to expand the reach of kho kho nationally and internationally in recent years.
The development comes at a time when indigenous Indian sports are gaining increasing attention and investment, with states such as Odisha also extending support to promote kho kho at the national level.
