Syndrela Das found the perfect way to celebrate her 17th birthday — not with a cake, but with two championship trophies.

The West Bengal paddler produced one of the most memorable performances of the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships in Kanpur, winning the women’s singles as well as the Under-19 girls’ singles title on the same day.

What made the achievement even more impressive was the workload behind it. Das played seven matches during the day and won all seven, showing remarkable physical endurance and mental composure as she moved between the youth and senior competitions.

Senior title came after a six-game battle

The biggest test arrived in the women’s singles final, where Das faced Maharashtra’s Divyanshi Bhowmick, a familiar opponent and close friend.

Bhowmick made the stronger start, taking the opening game 11-9. Das, however, immediately changed the momentum, winning the next two games 11-8, 11-8.

The match then swung again as Bhowmick dominated the fourth game 11-5 to make it 2-2.

Das responded when it mattered most. She took the fifth game 11-7 before holding her nerve in the sixth to win 11-9 and seal the championship.

Women’s Singles Final:

Syndrela Das bt Divyanshi Bhowmick 4-2

9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9

U-19 title completed the double

Das had already secured the Under-19 crown, making her achievement even more significant.

In the U-19 final, she defeated Tamil Nadu’s Ananya Muralidharan 4-1. After sharing the first two games, Das gradually established control and finished the contest strongly.

U-19 Girls’ Singles Final:

Syndrela Das bt Ananya Muralidharan 4-1

11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4

A crucial comeback before the final

Das’s senior title was built on resilience as much as skill.

In the women’s singles semifinal, she faced Swastika Ghosh in a tense seven-game contest. The match reached a deciding game, where Das found herself trailing 4-7.

Instead of allowing the deficit to dictate the result, she produced a composed comeback and eventually won the decider 11-9 to advance to the final.

That victory was particularly important given what followed. Das still had to manage another demanding final against Bhowmick — all while competing across events on her birthday.

Seven matches, two titles, one unforgettable birthday

The numbers tell the story of Das’s remarkable day:

Age: 17

Titles won: 2

Matches played: 7

Matches won: 7

Women’s singles final: Won 4-2

U-19 girls’ final: Won 4-1

Women’s singles semifinal: Won 4-3

Rather than allowing fatigue to become a factor, Das used every victory to build momentum.

The double also underlines her ability to compete beyond her age category. She is increasingly making an impact in senior competition while continuing to dominate at the youth level.

More than just a birthday celebration

The Kanpur triumph comes at an important point in Das’s career. The teenager has already established herself as one of the promising names in India’s next generation of table tennis players.

Her ability to recover during long matches, deal with pressure and maintain her level through a demanding schedule could prove particularly valuable as she steps into bigger international competitions.

The timing is also significant with the 2026 Asian Games approaching. Das is expected to be among the youngest Indian athletes at the continental event, giving her latest domestic success added importance.

Her rise has not gone unnoticed. Earlier in the year, Das and Bhowmick also formed a successful partnership in international doubles, winning the women’s doubles title at the WTT Feeder Cappadocia.

The takeaway

Syndrela Das did not simply win two titles in Kanpur. She demonstrated the ability to handle volume, pressure and expectation in a single day.

Seven matches. Seven victories. Two championships.

And perhaps most fittingly, it all happened on her 17th birthday.

For a player still at the beginning of her senior career, it was a celebration that could become one of the early highlights of what promises to be an exciting journey in Indian table tennis.
