Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced Julian Metherell as its next president, with the London Spirit chairman set to succeed former England batter Ed Smith later this year.
Metherell’s nomination was confirmed during MCC’s 239th Annual General Meeting, where current president Ed Smith officially named him as his successor. He is scheduled to assume office on October 1, 2026.
A long-time MCC member with a strong background in finance and cricket administration, Metherell has been associated with the club for nearly four decades. He joined the MCC Committee following approval at the club’s 2025 AGM and has played a key role in several major developments involving the organisation.
Metherell currently serves as chairman of The Hundred franchise London Spirit and was heavily involved in MCC’s negotiations during the sale process of a 49 percent stake in the franchise. The investment deal, led by a Silicon Valley-backed consortium, reportedly valued London Spirit as the most expensive franchise in The Hundred competition.
Outside cricket, Metherell built a successful career in global finance. He worked as a partner at Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2011 and later served as chief executive of the company’s UK investment banking division. He is also the founder and chief financial officer of Genel Energy, while maintaining interests in the energy and shipping industries.
Metherell has also contributed significantly to cricket governance. He served as non-executive chairman of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024 and currently chairs the advisory board of Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.
Speaking after the announcement, Metherell said he felt “deeply honoured” to take on the prestigious role and described it as a special moment after years of association with Lord’s and MCC. He also expressed excitement about helping guide the club during what he called a transformative period for cricket and franchise ownership.
Outgoing president Ed Smith praised Metherell’s leadership qualities and cricketing passion, saying his combination of business expertise and commitment to the sport made him an ideal choice to lead MCC into its next chapter.
During Metherell’s tenure, Lord’s Cricket Ground is also expected to host major international fixtures, including matches from the 2027 Ashes series involving both Australia’s men’s and women’s teams.
