Andrea Pavan says he remains hopeful of returning to professional golf after suffering major injuries in a frightening lift shaft fall earlier this year.
The 36-year-old endured a life-threatening accident in February while staying near Stellenbosch Golf Club ahead of the South African Open. Pavan stepped into what he believed was a functioning elevator, only to discover too late that the lift car was not there, causing him to fall three storeys down the shaft.
He was rushed to hospital with severe shoulder damage and multiple fractures to vertebrae in his back. The injuries required major surgery, and Pavan spent a week recovering in hospital in South Africa before returning to his home in Texas.
Speaking about his recovery, Pavan explained that the process will be gradual and uncertain. Doctors are monitoring how well his bones heal over the coming months, with key assessments expected around the three- and six-month mark.
“There are steps rather than a fixed timeline,” he said, adding that full recovery could take close to a year. He also acknowledged potential complications, including the risk of further surgery and concerns such as necrosis if blood supply to the bone is affected.
Long Road to Recovery
The shoulder injury remains the biggest challenge for Pavan, given the demands of a full golf swing. While early signs have been encouraging, he admitted there are still many unknowns due to the severity of the trauma.
Despite the uncertainty, the two-time DP World Tour winner is focused on steady progress. His aim is to regain full movement and strength before attempting a competitive return.
Pavan also recalled the terrifying moments immediately after the fall, describing how he remained conscious but in intense pain at the bottom of the shaft. He managed to call his caddie while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Support from Golfing Community
During his recovery, Pavan received strong support from fellow professionals, including Matteo Manassero, who visited him in hospital alongside other players despite ongoing tournament commitments.
The outpouring of support left a lasting impact on Pavan, who described it as “overwhelming” and a source of comfort during a difficult period.
For now, his focus remains on rehabilitation and taking each day as it comes. While a return date is still unclear, Pavan’s optimism suggests he is determined to get back on the course after one of the most serious incidents of his career.
