The Salomon Cappadocia Ultra-Trail in Türkiye has achieved global acclaim after securing the top honour in the “Community Impact in Sports Tourism” category at the inaugural UN Tourism Awards for Excellence in Sustainable Sports Tourism. The prestigious recognition highlights the event’s leadership in blending sport, sustainability, and community development.
Held annually in the breathtaking landscapes of Cappadocia, the ultra-trail race has grown into one of the region’s most significant sporting events, attracting over 2,000 runners from across the world.
A benchmark in sustainable sports tourism
The Cappadocia Ultra-Trail stood out among global entries for its strong focus on environmental responsibility, local engagement, and destination promotion. Evaluated by an international jury, the event achieved the highest score in its category, underlining its commitment to eco-friendly practices and meaningful community impact.
Organised by Argeus Travel & Events and supported by the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), the race has consistently demonstrated how sports tourism can drive sustainable growth while preserving natural and cultural heritage.
Global recognition at Madrid ceremony
The awards ceremony took place in Madrid on March 19, as part of the ABB Formula E FIA World Championship event calendar. The platform brought together global leaders, policymakers, and sports tourism experts to celebrate innovative projects shaping the future of sustainable travel.
The recognition not only elevates the status of the Cappadocia Ultra-Trail but also strengthens Türkiye’s reputation as a leading destination for sustainable sports tourism.
Cappadocia: A global hub for trail running
Set against the surreal backdrop of Cappadocia’s valleys, volcanic formations, and the UNESCO-listed Göreme Open Air Museum, the ultra-trail offers a unique racing experience. The event continues to unite elite athletes and amateur runners, creating a vibrant international sporting community.
Now heading into its 13th edition, the race is expected to attract even greater global participation, fueled by its recent international recognition.
Boosting Türkiye’s outdoor tourism appeal
Beyond the race, Türkiye offers diverse outdoor experiences—from hiking and cycling to skiing, rafting, and paragliding. Cappadocia, in particular, remains a year-round adventure destination, combining natural beauty with rich cultural heritage.
With increased visibility through global platforms like UN Tourism and FIA, the Cappadocia Ultra-Trail is set to further amplify its impact—positioning both the event and Türkiye at the forefront of sustainable sports tourism worldwide.
