Defender Dan Ballard has been included in the Northern Ireland national football team squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers play-off despite a recent hamstring concern.
The Sunderland AFC centre-back was forced off during the second half of his side’s Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill admitted he is unsure about the full extent of the injury but hopes the defender will recover in time for the crucial fixture.
Morrison earns first senior call-up
One of the biggest talking points in the squad announcement is the inclusion of 19-year-old Kieran Morrison, who has received his first senior international call-up.
The young winger plays for Liverpool FC and has impressed this season with the club’s youth sides. Morrison has already appeared in domestic cup competitions, including the FA Cup and EFL Cup, and has been named in several matchday squads.
Meanwhile, the squad also sees the return of goalkeeper Pierce Charles and midfielder Shea Charles, while Ali McCann and defender Brodie Spencer return after missing the previous qualifiers.
Injury concerns ahead of crucial tie
Northern Ireland will be without key defender Conor Bradley, who is sidelined with a knee injury sustained while playing for Liverpool earlier this year.
There are also doubts over several players in the squad due to minor injuries, including goalkeeper Conor Hazard, though O’Neill remains hopeful they will recover in time.
Italy clash awaits in play-offs
Northern Ireland will face Italy national football team in Bergamo on 26 March in the play-off semi-final. The winner will then meet either Wales national football team or Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in the final.
Victory in the play-off would secure a place in the World Cup group stage alongside Canada national soccer team, Switzerland national football team, and Qatar national football team.
With several players returning and new talent emerging, O’Neill will hope his squad can overcome the injury setbacks and deliver a strong performance in the crucial matches ahead.
