Teenager Kimi Antonelli secured his first Formula One victory after leading a dominant one-two for Mercedes at the Chinese Grand Prix. The 19-year-old produced a composed drive to finish ahead of team-mate George Russell at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Historic victory for Antonelli
Antonelli became the second-youngest race winner in Formula One history, behind Max Verstappen, who won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at the age of 18. The win also made Antonelli the first Italian driver to claim a Formula One victory since Giancarlo Fisichella triumphed at the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix.
The young driver briefly lost the lead at the start when Lewis Hamilton surged ahead in his Ferrari. However, Antonelli regained the position on lap two and controlled the race from the front. Despite a late lock-up near the end, he held his nerve to cross the line 5.5 seconds ahead of Russell.
Russell’s second place allowed him to keep the championship lead, sitting four points ahead of Antonelli after the race.
Ferrari duel provides major drama
Behind the Mercedes pair, Hamilton and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc produced one of the most entertaining battles of the race.
The two drivers repeatedly swapped positions through the middle phase of the race, attacking each other at multiple corners. Eventually Hamilton secured third place, earning his first podium since joining Ferrari, while Leclerc finished fourth.
Retirements and McLaren disappointment
The race also featured several retirements. Both McLaren drivers failed to start after electrical issues, with Lando Norris unable to reach the grid and Oscar Piastri forced to retire before the race began.
Further drama saw Verstappen retire late in the race while running sixth. Fernando Alonso also pulled out due to severe vibration issues affecting his car.
Midfield fight and top ten finishers
Behind the leading four, Oliver Bearman impressed with fifth place for Haas. Pierre Gasly finished sixth for Alpine, while Liam Lawson secured seventh for Racing Bulls.
The remaining points positions were taken by Isack Hadjar, Carlos Sainz, and Franco Colapinto.
Formula One now heads to the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit, the final race before a month-long break following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
