Reece James has signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea FC, committing his future to the club until 2032.
The 26-year-old captain, a product of Chelsea’s academy, made his first-team debut in September 2019 and has since become one of the key figures at Stamford Bridge.
According to reports, James’ new agreement includes an incentive-based structure linked to both individual and team performances. The England international is currently Chelsea’s highest-paid player, earning around £250,000 per week.
Academy graduate becomes club leader
James had previously signed a long-term deal in 2022 shortly after the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. His contract at that time was due to run until 2028, making him a priority for renewal.
So far this season, James has started 19 of his 26 Premier League appearances and has made 225 appearances overall for Chelsea.
“I am over the moon to have extended my contract – Chelsea means so much to me,” James told the club’s official website. “I have always said I want my peak years to be here.”
Trophy success and injury setbacks
During his time at the club, James helped Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League in 2021, followed by the UEFA Super Cup the same year. He also lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
However, several seasons have been disrupted by injuries. James underwent surgery in December 2023 to treat a recurring hamstring problem but has since returned strongly and regained his place in the team.
His versatility has also been valuable for Chelsea, with the defender capable of playing both at full-back and in midfield.
World Cup target
On the international stage, James is aiming to secure a place in 2026 FIFA World Cup with England national football team.
After missing the previous two major tournaments due to injuries, he returned to the national squad in early 2025 and featured in qualification matches against Albania national football team and Latvia national football team.
Although he later withdrew from October friendlies through injury, James returned in November and played in England’s 2-0 victory over Serbia national football team at Wembley.
