Russell Wins Australian Grand Prix As Antonelli Completes Mercedes One-Two
Mercedes made a strong start to the 2026 Formula One season as George Russell claimed victory in the opening race of the year, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli to the finish line to secure a 1-2 result for the team at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Russell delivered a composed drive throughout the race and managed the closing laps comfortably to take the chequered flag. Antonelli followed closely behind to give Mercedes a perfect start to the new campaign, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium with a third-place finish.
Ferrari Shows Early Pace But Strategy Turns The Race
Ferrari initially appeared to have the upper hand in the early stages of the race. Charles Leclerc got off to a strong start and battled with the Mercedes drivers for the lead, while teammate Lewis Hamilton also remained in contention during the opening laps.
However, the race shifted in Mercedes’ favour during a Virtual Safety Car period. Mercedes opted to bring both drivers into the pits early, a move that proved decisive as Ferrari chose to stay out. When Ferrari eventually made their pit stops later under green flag conditions, Russell regained the lead and maintained control until the end.
Leclerc managed to hold on for third place, while Hamilton narrowly missed out on the podium and finished fourth.
Action-Packed Season Opener In New F1 Era
The Australian Grand Prix marked the first race of Formula One’s new 2026 technical regulations, which introduce significant changes to hybrid power units and energy deployment systems. The race featured intense battles at the front along with several strategic decisions that shaped the final result.
McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth after a consistent performance, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen recovered from a challenging qualifying session to climb through the field and secure sixth place.
Mercedes Sends Early Championship Message
With both Russell and Antonelli finishing at the top, Mercedes delivered a clear statement at the start of the season. The team demonstrated both pace and strategic strength, allowing them to capitalise on Ferrari’s early challenge.
The dominant result gives Mercedes an early advantage in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships as the 2026 Formula One season begins.
