Fluminense Edge Chelsea to Enter Club World Cup Final

New Jersey: Brazilian champions Fluminense stunned Premier League giants Chelsea with a 1-0 victory at MetLife Stadium to advance to the FIFA Club World Cup Final, scheduled for July 13.

Despite Chelsea entering the semifinal as clear favorites, Fluminense displayed resilience, tactical discipline, and clinical execution. The lone goal came in the second half, rewarding the South American side’s compact defensive strategy and patient build-up play.

Chelsea Fall Short Despite Form and Favoritism

Chelsea came into the clash on the back of 12 wins in their last 14 matches across all competitions, having seen off Palmeiras and Benfica in the previous rounds. The team was further encouraged by the news that two PSG defenders would miss the final due to suspension, had Chelsea qualified.

However, those plans were undone by Fluminense’s disciplined performance. The Premier League side dominated possession but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

Fluminense’s Tactical Masterclass

Managed by Renato Gaúcho, Fluminense executed a near-flawless defensive setup, supported by veteran leadership from players like Thiago Silva, who faced his former club, and goalkeeper Fábio, whose calm presence proved vital.

With eight goals scored and only three conceded in the tournament, the Brazilian side have emerged as one of the most balanced teams, blending youth, experience, and efficient football.

What’s Next

Fluminense now prepare for the Club World Cup Final on July 13, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between Paris Saint-Germain and Al Ahly. Chelsea, meanwhile, will compete in the third-place playoff.

The victory marks Fluminense’s first-ever trip to the Club World Cup final and highlights the strength of South American football in a tournament often dominated by European clubs.
