When Jammu and Kashmir cricket team lifted its maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2025-26, defeating Karnataka cricket team in the final in Hubballi, it marked the culmination of years of belief and behind-the-scenes transformation.
The triumph was not built overnight. It was shaped by five years of structure, discipline and vision — led by head coach Ajay Sharma, bowling coach Krishna Kumar and fielding coach Dishant Yagnik.
From participants to contenders
Just a season ago, J&K had reached the knockouts before losing to Kerala on the basis of a one-run first-innings lead in a drawn quarter-final. That heartbreak proved a stepping stone.
This season, the side registered three outright wins — against former champions Rajasthan, Delhi and Hyderabad — with their only setback coming against Mumbai.
“The self-belief has come,” Ajay said. “There is healthy competition in the group. They’re hunting like a pack of wolves now.”
Krishna Kumar emphasised the growing professionalism within the squad. “Even a small misfield is discussed in meetings. That has made everyone responsible. We’re ticking most boxes.”
Process over results
Yagnik highlighted the collaborative nature of the coaching set-up. “Our focus is on process over results. Coaching doesn’t end at 5 p.m. — discussions continue late into the night. If we improve internally, the results will follow.”
The foundation for the turnaround, according to the coaching staff, was laid when former India cricketer Mithun Manhas took charge in 2021-22, strengthening infrastructure and professional standards. Support from administrators such as Brigadier Anil Gupta and Sethi further shaped a clear roadmap for success.
A new force in domestic cricket
Jammu & Kashmir’s rise has been steady rather than sudden. In 2024-25, they stunned heavyweights including 42-time champion Mumbai and Baroda on their home turf, signalling their arrival as genuine contenders.
Now, with a first Ranji Trophy crown secured, the team that once aimed merely to compete has rewritten its identity.
The destination may have been reached — but with renewed ambition and belief, this could be just the beginning for J&K cricket.
