Milano Cortina, Italy — Great Britain has finally achieved what had eluded it for more than a century — an Olympic gold medal on snow. At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale produced a stunning performance to win the mixed team snowboard cross title, marking Team GB’s first ever Winter Olympic gold in a snow discipline.
Competing at Livigno Snow Park, the British duo finished first in the final, clocking a combined run that saw them edge out Italy by 0.43 seconds.
Mixed Team Snowboard Cross – Final Result
Great Britain – Charlotte Bankes / Huw Nightingale (Gold)
Italy – Michela Moioli / Lorenzo Sommariva (Silver)
France – Léa Casta / Loan Bozzolo (Bronze)
According to BBC Sport, this victory ends a 102-year wait for Britain to stand atop the podium in a snow-based event at the Winter Games. Since the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924, British gold medals had only come in ice disciplines such as skeleton, figure skating and curling.
“It’s hard to believe — we knew we had it in us,” Bankes was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. Nightingale added that the team had spoken about delivering when it mattered most, and they executed their plan to perfection.
The race itself was dramatic. Nightingale delivered a strong opening leg to keep Britain in contention before Bankes took control in the second run. She made a decisive move midway down the course to overtake France and then held off the Italian charge in the closing metres to secure gold.
BBC Sport also highlighted that both athletes had endured disappointment in their individual snowboard cross events earlier in the Games. However, they regrouped for the mixed team competition and delivered under pressure — a response that underlined their resilience.
The win also contributed to what has been described as Team GB’s most successful Winter Olympics in terms of gold medals, with multiple titles secured in Milano Cortina. But this one stands apart.
For a nation without the alpine terrain of winter sport powerhouses, and with limited domestic snow infrastructure, this medal represents more than a single triumph. It is a symbolic breakthrough — proof that British athletes can now compete and win at the highest level on snow.
As BBC Sport noted, it has been a long time coming. On Sunday in Italy, that wait finally ended.
