New Delhi : The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Gupta, a prominent figure in sports broadcasting and media, takes over the position with immediate effect, becoming the seventh individual to occupy the role.
Gupta succeeds Geoff Allardice, who stepped down earlier this year after nearly four years at the helm. In an official statement, the ICC described Gupta as an accomplished executive whose experience is expected to usher in a new phase of growth and innovation for world cricket.
Until recently, Gupta served as CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at JioStar, the merged sports media venture between Reliance’s Viacom18 and Disney Star. Over the past two decades, he has been credited with transforming sports broadcasting in India, leading initiatives to expand digital reach, regional language coverage, and the visibility of women’s sports.
“ I am honoured to have been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the ICC at such an exciting time for the game,” Gupta said in a statement released by the governing body. “Cricket’s popularity continues to grow across continents, and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to take the sport to new heights.”
The recruitment process began in March 2025 and drew applications from more than 2,500 candidates worldwide. The ICC Nominations Committee, chaired by Chairman Jay Shah, unanimously recommended Gupta after an extensive selection process.
Jay Shah praised Gupta’s appointment, highlighting his “deep understanding of sports, media, and technology,” and describing him as an ideal candidate to steer cricket into a new era marked by digital transformation and the sport’s push for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
One of Gupta’s immediate priorities will be expanding the game’s global footprint, enhancing the fan experience across platforms, and capitalising on emerging commercial opportunities. His leadership is also expected to focus on strengthening cricket’s presence in the United States and other non-traditional markets.
Gupta’s appointment has been widely welcomed within cricket circles, with industry observers noting that his expertise in broadcasting could help the ICC unlock new revenue streams and build a more engaged global audience.
