CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy : Team GB’s Matt Weston is in pole position for Olympic gold after topping the men’s skeleton standings following the first two runs at the 2026 Winter Olympics, delivering a stunning display of speed and control.
Weston clocked a combined time of 1:52.09, including a blistering 55.88 seconds in Run 2, setting back-to-back track records at the Eugenio Monti Sliding Center. He now leads Germany’s Axel Jungk by 0.30 seconds, with reigning Olympic champion Christopher Grotheer in third place.
Despite off-track tension surrounding the event, Weston remained composed, focusing on precision and rhythm down the icy track.
“I’m pretty happy with the way it’s gone. There are still things I can improve,” Weston said, keeping his focus on the final two runs. (Credit: BBC Sport)
Fellow Briton Marcus Wyatt sits seventh, still within reach of the podium heading into the decisive final heats on Friday.
With medals often decided by hundredths of a second in skeleton, Weston’s lead puts him in a strong position — but the title race remains wide open.
