Manchester United’s FA Cup campaign came to a premature end on Sunday as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a memorable 2-1 victory at Old Trafford, knocking the 12-time winners out in the third round.
It was a difficult second outing for caretaker manager Darren Fletcher following the departure of Ruben Amorim, as United once again struggled for control and composure against well-organised opposition.
Brighton took an early grip on the contest when Brajan Gruda struck in the 12th minute, capitalising on defensive uncertainty to put the visitors ahead. United failed to respond with urgency, allowing Brighton to dictate the tempo for much of the first half.
The decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute through a familiar face. Former United striker Danny Welbeck curled a superb effort into the top corner from just inside the box, scoring against his boyhood club for the eighth time since leaving in 2014.
United found a lifeline late on when Benjamin Šeško headed home Bruno Fernandes’ corner five minutes from time, but any hopes of a dramatic comeback were dashed when teenage substitute Shea Lacey was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. Brighton calmly saw out the closing moments to claim their first-ever FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
For United, another painful elimination deepens a season already defined by transition and inconsistency, while Brighton march on with confidence and history made.
