From Supporting Family To Sporting Glory
Raja Das, a 33-year-old Pencak Silat athlete from West Bengal who works part-time helping his father supply ice and support their family, clinched a gold medal at the Khelo India Beach Games in Diu, beating defending champion and local favourite Prasanna Bendre.
A Journey Rooted In Passion For Martial Arts
A commerce graduate, Raja discovered his passion for martial arts early but was drawn specifically to Pencak Silat’s choreography and combat style. He began training in 2017 after learning the sport was included in the 2018 Asian Games.
Overcoming Personal Tragedy And Financial Challenges
The journey was not easy. After the tragic death of his younger brother in a train accident, Raja took on family responsibilities while continuing his training. To earn extra income, he completed a physiotherapy course alongside his sporting commitments.
Building On Past Successes
Before his gold in Diu, Raja had already won silver at last year’s Khelo India Beach Games and at the 22nd National Games in Goa. He sees the KIBG gold as ideal preparation for the upcoming Senior National Championships and the international season.
Eyes Set On International Success
With support from the federation and government, Raja aims to represent India on the international stage and add more medals to his name.
