Chennai: Indian squash’s newest hero, Abhay Singh, is keeping his feet firmly on the ground — even as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. The Chennai-born captain, fresh from leading India to its maiden Squash World Cup triumph, insists that he isn’t letting the glitz of Olympic aspirations cloud the immediate goals ahead.
World Cup Glory — A Historic Backdrop
In December 2025, India stunned the squash world by clinching its first-ever Squash World Cup title in Chennai, defeating top-seeded Hong Kong 3–0 in the final. The spectacular victory — with wins from veterans like Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh himself, and rising star Anahat Singh — marked a watershed moment for Indian squash and made India the first Asian nation to lift the trophy.
The Global Indian
After celebrating the historic success with his teammates and the ecstatic home crowd, Abhay was asked about the looming Olympic opportunity. Rather than talk medals or LA dreams, he offered a grounded perspective.
“Closer to Qualification First”
“Till we are closer to qualification, I’m not thinking about squash at the LA Olympics,” Abhay said, underlining that his current focus is on meaningful ranking progress and key events on the PSA World Tour rather than the distant spectacle of the Olympics.
This view reflects the reality that:
Squash is set to debut officially at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics — a huge milestone for a sport long left out of the Olympic fold.
Qualification will be based on world rankings and key performances in the coming years — a journey where consistency matters more than hype.
More Than Just an Olympic Roadmap
Abhay’s approach is striking in its maturity. Rather than be swept up by Olympic fever, he’s emphasising process before payoff — training hard, competing tough, and steadily climbing the rankings.
With India now firmly on the global squash map after the World Cup win, the groundwork he speaks about could be what transforms a historic achievement into sustained Olympic-era success.
