Two time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen has undergone surgery on an Achilles injury in the United States but has insisted the problem is not as serious as it appears and that he is focused on returning soon.
Injury Forced Timely Intervention
The 25 year old revealed that he first picked up the injury in April last year but continued to compete, including at the World Championships in September where he failed to win a medal.
The issue returned in January and worsened, leaving surgery as the only option. Doctors removed scar tissue from around the paratenon, the protective sheath surrounding the Achilles tendon.
Rehabilitation Plan Already Underway
Ingebrigtsen said the operation went smoothly and that he is now following a rehabilitation programme expected to last only a few months.
While Achilles surgery can sometimes require long recovery periods, the Norwegian athlete remains confident of an early comeback.
Athlete Shares Positive Update
Posting on social media, Ingebrigtsen said the surgery was important for the long term health of his career and that he finally has clarity after months of uncertainty.
He also explained that the tendon itself was healthy and that only the damaged sheath had been treated.
Focus Shifts to Return and Championships
The middle distance star won 1500m gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and claimed the 5000m title in Paris in 2024, but struggled at the 2025 World Championships.
With recovery now underway, Ingebrigtsen will be aiming to regain full fitness in time for the European Championships in Birmingham this August.
