Kolkata: Uganda’s Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei and Ethiopia’s Degitu Azimeraw produced authoritative performances to claim top honours in the men’s and women’s elite races respectively at the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata on Sunday.
Cheptegei Controls Men’s Elite Race
Cheptegei, one of the world’s finest long-distance runners, dominated the men’s elite field with a tactically sound race. Maintaining a steady pace through the early kilometres, the Ugandan surged ahead in the latter stages to seal victory comfortably, underlining his class and experience on the road circuit.
The race featured a strong international field, but Cheptegei’s composure and finishing strength proved decisive as he crossed the line well ahead of his closest challengers.
Degitu Clinches Women’s Title In Style
In the women’s elite race, Ethiopia’s Degitu Azimeraw delivered a commanding run to emerge champion. She gradually broke away from the leading pack and maintained her advantage to register a convincing win, displaying excellent endurance and control throughout the race.
Degitu’s victory added another notable success to Ethiopia’s rich tradition in distance running and marked a standout performance at one of Asia’s premier road races.
Strong Showing By Indian Athletes
The event also witnessed encouraging performances by Indian runners, with several athletes delivering personal bests and course-record efforts in domestic categories. Their showing reflected the growing strength of Indian distance running on the international stage.
